Livestock management promotes bush encroachment in savanna systems by altering plant–herbivore feedback

چکیده

Savannas are characterized by the coexistence of two contrasting plant life-forms: woody and herbaceous vegetation. During last decades, there has been a global trend an increase in cover spread shrubs trees into areas that were previously dominated grasses. This process, termed bush encroachment, is associated with severe losses ecosystem functions typically difficult to reverse. It assumed be example critical transition between alternative stable states. Overgrazing due unsustainable rangeland management identified as one main causes this transition, it can trigger several self-reinforcing feedback loops. However, dynamic role grazing within such loops received less attention. We used set coupled differential equations describe competition grasses, well biomass consumption via browsing. Grazers receive certain level care from farmers, so grazer densities emerge dynamically combined effect vegetation abundance farmer support. quantified all self-dampening at play analyzed their relative importance shaping system (in-)stability. Bistability, presence grass shrub state, emerges for intermediate levels support positive arises grasses herbivory. furthermore demonstrate disturbances, drought events, abrupt transitions state becomes more susceptible disturbances increasing Our results thus highlight potential interaction networks combinations loop analysis improving our understanding general, encroachment particular.

Bush encroachment control and risk management in semi-arid rangelands.

We study the role of bush encroachment control for a farmer's income and income risk in a stochastic ecological-economic model of grazing management in semi-arid rangelands. In particular, we study debushing as an instrument of risk management that complements the choice of an adaptive grazing management strategy for that sake. We show that debushing, while being a good practice for increasing ...

Biogeochemical Changes Accompanying Woody Plant Encroachment in a Subtropical Savanna

Ecosystem properties of surficial (0–10 cm) soils in remnant herbaceous patches were compared to those of contrasting woody plant patch types (upland discrete cluster, upland grove, and lowland woodland) where shifting land cover is known to have occurred over the past 50–77 yr. The purpose of this study was to evaluate and quantify the biogeochemical consequences and subsequent developmental r...

Mathematical theory for plantherbivore systems

The interactions of host plants with herbivores can be mediated by factors other than population sizes or biomass alone. Recent evidence indicates that features of the vegetation (loosely termed "plant quality") may change in response to herbivory and may, in turn, influence the performance of herbivores (i.e. by affecting survivorship, fecundity, or growth rates). A model which incorporates th...

A Review of Bush Encroachment in Namibia: From a Problem to an Opportunity?

Bush encroachment leads to land degradation in semiarid to arid regions. Over 45 million hectares of agricultural land in Namibia are affected. This is worrisome as nearly 70% of the Namibian population depends on agricultural activities and the beef industry is the mainstay of the farming communities. This study employed secondary data sources to provide a review of the problems and benefits o...

A Review on Bush Encroachment Effect on Cattle Rearing in Rangelands

Bush encroachment is an increase in woody plant density typically resulting in impenetrable thickets, suppressing palatable grasses and herbs. Moreover, bush encroachment is a globally observed phenomenon. Besides, increasing the density of unpalatable shrubs and trees has reduced the carrying capacity and threatens the sustainability of grazing animal production, especially in arid and semi-ar...
